2024 Nomination Form

The John Chancellor Award, founded in 1995, is presented each year to a journalist with courage, character, and integrity for cumulative professional accomplishments. The prize honors the legacy of pioneering television correspondent and longtime NBC News anchor John Chancellor. The winner is selected by a nine-member committee and presented with the $25,000 award at Columbia University.
 

To nominate a journalist for the John Chancellor Award, please fill out the following form. Where indicated, upload the required supporting materials, as detailed below.
Materials submitted will not be returned.

Supporting Materials:
A nominating letter by someone other than the journalist that includes a brief summary of journalistic accomplishments.The Chancellor Board looks for sustained journalistic accomplishments over time, where the journalist’s reporting as a whole is greater than any single story he or she may have covered. Please explain the impact of the reporting. Up to three additional letters of support (not including the nominating letter) accepted for each nomination.

Resume or CV, including any major awards received.

Provide 5-10 examples of the person's best work:
 

• Newspaper/Magazine Nominee: 5-10 significant newspaper or magazine stories by the nominee. In the original layout, if possible. Please upload as PDFs. Pieces must be easy to read. 
• Broadcast/TV or Radio Nominee: 5-10 significant broadcast stories by the nominee. TV and radio stories should be submitted just as they aired, without reediting. Contact the Chancellor Award office for coverage of breaking news stories, if applicable. Each broadcast submission must include the Total Run Time of broadcast submissions. Please enter working permanent web links to programming.
• Online/Digital Nominee: Web reports may be saved as PDFs and uploaded. You may also provide us with a live link. If providing a link, the link must remain live for at least 12 months.

The John B. Oakes Award is awarded for outstanding environmental reporting across platforms. The winner will receive $5,000 and will be recognized at a ceremony at Columbia Journalism School. All formats including text, audio and video reporting are eligible for the award. All entries must have appeared in the U.S. during 2023. The entry fee for each nomination is $75. Entry fees are non-refundable.





How to Nominate:



All materials should be formatted and uploaded as PDFs. Supporting multimedia presentations should be sent as URLs. Links must remain live through September 2024.



To enter online, please fill out the entry form and upload supporting materials.





Materials needed for entry:

• One to five pieces of environmental reporting. Materials may be uploaded as PDFs or as links. 


• Confirmation that the pieces appeared during 2023.

  
  
• Broadcast transcripts for radio or video reporting, or if your online entry includes audio/video components.


Supplemental materials such as a brief statement on the work as well as biographies of the persons who contributed to the pieces may be submitted.


Please keep in mind:

• A single article or a series of articles can be submitted. A series must be designated as such by the publication when it appeared. A regular column may also be submitted as a series.


• If submitting a series, up to five articles can be submitted. 


• The judges may divide the award among the writer, videographer, photographer, and illustrator, if their work substantially strengthens the winning story. 


• A translation must be supplied for any article not written in English.


• If a piece or series lives online, direct links may be provided. Otherwise, please upload the material to a site such as YouTube or Vimeo. 


• For all visual elements, the name of the photographer, videographer, or graphic artist should be included on all entry forms.


• Entry fees are non-refundable.
